About the Artist

Julann Campbell, a nationally recognized impressionist, is an oil painter who loves her medium.  Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest,  Campbell graduated from the University of Washington.  Her work there, like for many, was primarily with abstract composition and design.  Over the years, she ventured more toward working from life, primarily, working  “Alla Prima”, which means, working directly from life.

She studied with Sergei Bongart  and found that working this way, kept her colors honest and her eyes sharp.  It also allowed her feelings a chance to enter into the field of the painting.  This is probably why her paintings have  been so well received.

She moved to the peninsula across the Puget Sound from Seattle.  Her studio is there where she paints and teaches.  She will also be teaching this year in Seattle.

“My career in art has given me the opportunity to grow in not only my ability to paint but also in my knowledge of who I am.  First we have to know who we are before we really have anything to say.  The best painting of my life is yet to come.  That is how I always think.  I paint portraits, still life, land and seascapes.  What is important for me is to capture the truth of the day, moment or feeling.  Nothing is quite as exciting as working from life.  In thinking about the future direction of my work, I am aware that it must have a residing beauty and soul.

I also like sharing this walk with students who are willing to draw deep from within, in order to better their painting skills.  It is rewarding to see them grow and become strong in their own right.”

Objective
Art, like poetry, can amplify one’s feelings toward an area.  I would hope that my application would show how my painting could help people passing through these buildings appreciate our area  through new eyes; those of an artist, that appreciate and see the bold strength and fragile beauty of the Northwest.

In the community I am asked to work on projects that have meaning.  I will start later this month the sketches for both of the 2004 North Kitsap Teacher of the Year awards (Primary Grades K-6), as I did in 2002 and 2003.  I have done portraits in the state of Washington throughout my art career.  Windermere has been one of Poulsbo’s companies to hire me to do their newspaper sketches.  I have worked alongside Barbara Duryea in commissioned painting at bed and breakfasts, and at an apartment complex.  The work that means the most to me, other than my own artwork, is teaching students.  I appreciate them and learn from them as well.
